Lake Superior University! I know a couple of people there. Nice little campus. When I'm not exploring the meta-sedimentary rocks, I help prospectors. Most of their claims are diabase intrusions (associated with the Sudbury dike swarm) within the Archean Tonalites north of the Soo.

What a great resource. Thank you so very much for maintaining such an informative website for educating us midwesterners about the amazing history of our planet beneath our own feet. I will be using a lot of the information from MIGE in my science classes!

Keep up the great work!

I enjoyed your pics and blogs. I recognized many of the photo locations especially from around Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. I'm a former student from Lake Superior State Univ. in Sault Michigan and currently work as a geologist for Wesdome-Eagle River Gold Mine southwest of Wawa, Ontario near Lake Superior shore. We deal primarily with "Greenstone" belts involving Archaen Metavolcanics/metasediments. Having alot of fun! All the best and good luck to those out there stuying! There is tons of work out there for ya!
Cheers, Chris

Steve,

These videos are great! Very informative and your understanding of regional rock formations comes through ~ you're a teacher and you teach well on camera. You take us to interesting places in our own communities that we didn't know exist. Now we do. It's always fun to learn new things about our planet. Thanks, Steve. Keep up the great work you do. And, keep us posted.

Pamela

P.S. I absolutely love Copper Falls State Park. It's very magical.

Matthiesse is just southwest of Starved Rock. It is far more interesting (geologically) than Starved Rock. There is one large fold and a bunch of minor faults. Plus the Pennsylvainian is exposed there as well as the Middle Ordovician. Far less people too. Another good place, closer to Wisconsin in Nothwestern Illinois is Castle Rock State Park near Oregon, IL.

Looks like we're on at the same time! I recently visited Starved Rock in Illinois and was wondering what the geology of the park is? I'd also like any input on places to go, that are not as tourist oriented as Starved Rock.
